Kim Kardashian Skips Angel Ball in N.Y.C. Amid Kanye West Hospitalization

Kim Kardashian West skipped the Angel Ball in New York City on Monday, the same day her husband Kanye West was hospitalized in Los Angeles for exhaustion.

The Angel Ball would have been Kardashian West’s first public appearance since the Paris heist on Oct. 3, when she was tied up, gagged, held at gunpoint and robbed of millions of dollars of jewelry in her No Address Hotel apartment.

Her sisters Khloé and Kourtney Kardashian as well as momager Kris Jenner were in attendance at the black-tie event that honored the late Robert Kardashian. Also at their table were Corey Gamble and Jonathan Cheban.

The Angel Ball, which was held at the Cipriani Wall Street in New York, celebrates individuals who have made significant humanitarian and philanthropic contributions in support of cancer research.

Despite protesters who were outside the event shouting at the family for wearing fur, Kourtney, Khloé and Jenner walked the red carpet before heading inside to the event 45 minutes after it began. When an onlooker asked Jenner “How’s Kanye?” about her son-in-law, the Keeping Up with the Kardashians matriarch said, “Exhausted!”

Inside the event, Kourtney and Khloé were seen smiling and laughing with Cheban and Gamble while the auction took place. Around 10 p.m., attendees watched a compilation of home videos of the late Robert Kardashian with the family over the years as Kanye West’s song “Only One” played. Kris was clearly emotional as the videos played and could be seen wiping her eyes while watching the clips.

Designer Tommy Hilfiger then took the stage and introduced the family. “[They are] not only global brands but they are recognized personalities over the world” Hilfiger said of the sisters, and added that “behind the cameras they’re also a very tight knit family who work tirelessly for the causes they believe in and one has been cancer awareness.”

“Tonight they’re here to honor the memory of Robert and to continue to raise awareness,” Hilfiger continued.

After wrapping his warm welcome, Jenner, Khloé and Kourtney took the stage to accept an honor on Robert’s behalf.

“That video was a little bit of a tough act to follow,” Jenner said in her emotional speech. “(The Angel Ball) is one of the most rewarding things we do on an annual basis.”

“Lastly, I just want to say when I met Robert Kardashian, I was 17 years old. He kind of raised me and we had four kids together. … One of the things he used to teach me and then passed down to our children was about philanthropy and about giving and about doing it diligently, constantly, joyfully and generously. He taught me and them that no matter what you do in life and what you make, you give back. And you do it without saying a word because that’s what the Bible said. And we did.”

Upon closing her emotional, heartfelt speech, Jenner and her two daughters presented Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation with a check for $250,000. “We just wanted to do a little something that hopefully will be a start of … a continuous donation,” Jenner said.

Kardashian West’s cancellation of the event comes nearly two months after she was robbed at gunpoint in Paris during Paris Fashion Week. On Oct. 3, Kardashian West stayed in for the night as her former bodyguard, Pascal Duvier, escorted sisters Kourtney and Kendall Jenner for an evening out in France.

Just after she FaceTimed with brother Rob Kardashian and Blac Chyna for the engaged couple’s baby shower, five armed, masked men gained access to her private apartment after threatening the building’s concierge with a weapon, handcuffing him and forcing him to open the residence, according to CNN. Two of the men entered her room, held her at gunpoint, bound her hands and feet with tape and then locked her in the bathroom before making off with her jewelry.

Though the robbers did not physically harm the E! personality, — her rep confirmed “She is badly shaken but physically unharmed” — sources told PEOPLE that Kardashian West blamed herself after the incident for showcasing her ring on social media.

“Kim’s in shock and blaming herself. She’s tearing herself up that she Snapchatted the ring so much and wore it all the time. This incident is making her question everything. How she dresses, what she does,” a source close to the Kardashian family told PEOPLE. “Kanye wants to buy her the ring again but she just says she doesn’t want to think about it. He says he wants everything to go back to normal and for the incident to not affect their lives.”

Since the terrifying incident, Kardashian West has maintained a low-profile life. “The only ‘positive’ thing about the robbery is that Kim changed pace. Instead of working nonstop, her life has slowed down significantly. She seems happy about this,” a source told PEOPLE, and added, “She very much likes spending every day with her kids. Many times in the past, it was very hard for her to be way from her kids for work. Now she gets to wake up with her kids and go to sleep with her kids.”
