Trump Said to Name McFarland as Deputy National Security Adviser

Kathleen Troia "KT" McFarland
U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has chosen Kathleen Troia “KT” McFarland as his deputy national security adviser, adding another woman to the top ranks of his administration, according to two people familiar with the transition planning.

McFarland has accepted the position, according to one person familiar with the transition, and will work with retired Lieutenant General Michael Flynn, who Trump named as his national security adviser last week. Both people spoke on condition of anonymity ahead of a formal announcement from the transition team.

She has a long record of national security experience, serving as deputy assistant secretary of defense for public affairs in the early 1980s under President Ronald Reagan. McFarland also has worked as a national security analyst and a contributor to Fox News. She ran unsuccessfully for the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate in New York in 2006.

The deputy national security adviser position doesn’t require confirmation by the U.S. Senate.
