World's oldest fish hooks found in Japanese island cave

Archaeologists have found the world's oldest fish hooks in a cave on the Japanese island of Okinawa.
The pair, dating from about 23,000 years ago, were carved from sea snail shells and found with other ancient relics, according to a paper.
It is thought humans inhabited the island from at least 30,000 years ago, surviving despite scarce resources.

The findings suggest a wider use of advanced maritime technology in that era than previously thought.
Modern humans first moved to offshore islands some 50,000 years ago.
While fishing has been essential for early humans to spread around the planet, it is unclear how the technology evolved, with evidence limited to sites in Indonesia and Papua New Guinea.
"The new evidence demonstrates a geographically wider distribution of early maritime technology that extended north to the mid-latitude areas along the western Pacific coast," according to the National Academy of Sciences.
The fish hooks predate ones found in Timor, thought …

Watford Beat Man Utd 3:1

Manchester United crashed to a third straight defeat in all competitions as Watford won 3-1 win at Vicarage Road.
United had gone behind to a 34th-minute Etienne Capoue strike but fought back to equalise through Marcus Rashford, making his first Premier League start of the season, just after the hour mark.
However, Zuniga, on a season-long loan from Napoli, made an instant impact by scoring with his first touch before Troy Deeney added a penalty in added time.

Jose Mourinho started the game with a strong attacking line-up that included Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Wayne Rooney, Anthony Martial and Rashford but did not see an improvement made on lacklustre displays that have resulted in losses to Manchester City and Feyenoord.
Both sides had chances before Capoue’s opener; Odion Ighalo shooting wide with an open goal at his mercy on 13 minutes after a defensive mix-up between Smalling and David De Gea, and Troy Deeney seeing a header well saved by De Gea minutes later.
Ibrahimovic missed f…

Asamoah Gyan powers Al Ahli to victory in Arabian Gulf League

Asamoah Gyan took only four minutes to announce his return to the Arabian Gulf League as he scored in Al Ahli’s comprehensive win over Emirates club.
The champions got their title defence off to a winning start, beating Emirates 4-0at the Rashid Stadium with Gyan netting the opening goal.
The frontman, setting out on a year-long loan from China’s Shanghai SIPG, won a penalty and then casually converted it.

It was his 96th goal in 84 UAE top-flight matches, his second for the Knights following last week’s Arabian Gulf Cup strike against Al Ain.
Gyan was withdrawn on the hour, applauded off the pitch by the scattering of loyal supporters who braved the stifling early evening conditions to watch Ahli embark on their title defence.
He was benched in midweek for the 2-1 victory against Al Jazira in the Arabian Gulf Super Cup.
