Obama grants 79 prison sentence commutations

President Barack Obama reduced the sentences of another 79 federal prisoners by exercising his commutation power, the White House said on Tuesday, bringing to more than 1,000 the number of prisoners whose sentences were commuted under Obama.
The prisoners are mainly non-violent drug offenders, a group the White House had hoped to reach through criminal justice reform bills that have stalled in Congress.

Obama, with the help of pro-bono lawyers and the Justice Department, announced in 2014 that he would use clemency and commutation powers to right the wrong of sentences he saw as overly harsh and unfit of the crime.

"While we are continuing to push for criminal justice reform, and that important piece of business remains unfinished, I'm pleased to say the president has not just met but exceeded what he set out to do in 2014 by reinvigorating the clemency project," said White House Counsel Neil Eggleston.

Eggleston said the vast majority of the more than 1,000 prison…

Ellen DeGeneres forgot to bring ID to White House

White House security doesn't fool around when it comes to requiring guests to provide photo identification. Ellen DeGeneres just found that out the hard way.
"They haven't let me into the White House yet because I forgot my ID," the comedian tweeted Tuesday afternoon from Lafayette Square.  "Not joking."

She finally got in about an hour later, just in time to do the mannequin challenge with some of the other attendees for this afternoon's Presidential Medal of Freedom ceremony, which is Barack Obama's last before leaving office. Inside Kanye West’s Breakdown: Rapper Feels Like ‘He’s Under Spiritual Attack,’ Source Says

Kanye West was hospitalized for exhaustion on Monday, and a source tells PEOPLE he “feels like he’s under spiritual attack.”
Hours after West, 39, canceled the remaining 21 dates of his Saint Pablo tour, the rapper went to the hospital following the advice of his doctor, a source says.

“He is exhausted and currently dealing with sleep deprivation. He went to the hospital at will under the advise of his physician. He’s fine,” a source previously confirmed to PEOPLE.

In the wake of his wife Kim Kardashian West being held at gunpoint and robbed of millions of dollars worth of jewelry on Oct. 3, the musician and clothing designer is “in a very reflective place right now.”

“He feels like he’s under spiritual attack, and has been for awhile. It’s not just the big things; it’s smaller, quieter things, internal things. You might think that it’s about Kim’s robbery, and while that didn’t help, that’s not what’s going on here. He’s dealing with a lot more subtle issues,” the source tells…

Trump won’t pursue case against Clinton, Conway says

President-elect Donald Trump has decided that he won't seek criminal investigations related to former rival Hillary Clinton’s private email server or her family foundation, his campaign manager said Tuesday.
Trump’s apparent decison, conveyed by campaign manager Kellyanne Conway in an interview on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,’’ is a change from his campaign rhetoric, in which he issued incendiary calls for a special prosecutor to reopen the FBI’s closed investigation of Clinton’s use of a private server while secretary of state and had also urged investigations of allegations of corruption at the Clinton Foundation. He nicknamed the Democratic nominee “Crooked Hillary” and encouraged chants of “Lock her up!” at his rallies.

Trump’s decision to pursue or not pursue a criminal investigation from the Oval Office would be an extraordinary break with political and legal protocol, which holds that the attorney general and FBI make decisions on whether to conduct investigations and fil…

Kim Kardashian West skipped the Angel Ball in New York City on Monday, the same day her husband Kanye West was hospitalized in Los Angeles for exhaustion.

The Angel Ball, which was held at the Cipriani Wall Street in New York, celebrates individuals who have made significant humanitarian and philanthropic contributions in support of cancer research.

Despite protesters who were outside the event shouting at the family for wearing fur, Kourtney, Khloé and Jenner walked the red carpet before heading inside to the event 45 minutes after it b…

Malawi 'hyena man' Eric Aniva sentenced to two years hard labour

An HIV-positive Malawian man has been sentenced to 24 months in jail with hard labour for having unprotected sex with newly bereaved widows.
The practice of "widow cleansing", when a widow must have sex after her husband dies, was outlawed a few years ago.
Eric Aniva, known in Malawi as a "hyena", admitted to the BBC to having sex with more than 100 women and girls and not disclosing his HIV status.

This led to President Peter Mutharika ordering his arrest in July.
Mr Mutharika had wanted Aniva tried for defiling young girls, but none came forward to testify against him.
Instead, he was tried for "harmful cultural practice" under section five of Malawi's Gender Equality Act, for having sex with new widows.
Two women testified against him.
Aniva's lawyer, Michael Goba Chipeta, said he would appeal against the conviction and the sentence.
The case has attracted international media attention and sharply divided opinion as to how widespread the practic…

Referees suspended by Caf for 'poor performance'

Two referees and one assistant referee have been suspended for three months by the Confederation of African Football after poor performances in 2018 World Cup qualifiers in November.
Ghanaian Joseph Lamptey incorrectly awarded South Africa a penalty in their 2-1 win over Senegal.

Kenyan referee Davies Omweno denied Libya what was a valid goal in their 1-0 defeat by Tunisia.
His assistant, Berhe O'Michael of Eritrea, had wrongly flagged offside.
Caf also warned the other assistant referee in the match, Rwanda's Theogene Ndagijimana.
Public shaming of the match officials is highly unusual in international football.
World governing body Fifa and its European counterpart Uefa, for example, maintain policies of never commenting publicly on the performances of referees and linesmen.
But Caf said in a statement that Lamptey was guilty of "poor performance" in his match and "awarded a wrong penalty for handball despite the fact that the ball never touched the hand of …

[Video] Its Shameful For EC To Charge Media To Cover Elections- Sefa Kayi

“My problem with Electoral Commission is that I think it’s shameful that you’ll charge the media to cover the elections. We’re not a very sincere people. We would like to cover things up,” Multiple award-winning host of Peace FM’s flagship programme ‘Kokrokoo’ turned the heat on the Electoral Commission (EC) over the Commission’s charges for accreditation for media practitioners in the country.
The EC asked the various and interested media houses that seek to cover the 2016 Elections to pay money before they receive accreditations to give field reports on the elections.
Each media house is required to meet the financial charges by the Commission or forfeit its election coverage.

Responding to the EC’s order, Mr. Sefa Kayi, affectionately called “Chairman General” for his unmatched broadcast acuity, lambasted the Commission for being unfair to the media.

He expressed his resentments, saying the EC’s decision is “just like State protocol asking journalists to pay money to cover t…

Judge urges new citizens to leave US if can't accept Trump

A federal judge in San Antonio finds himself at the center of an uproar after telling newly sworn U.S. citizens that Donald Trump is "your president, and if you don't like that, you need to go to another country."
U.S. Magistrate Judge John Primono's comments were reported by KENS-TV in San Antonio, which covered the naturalization ceremony at which 500 immigrants took the oath of U.S. citizenship at the Institutes of Texan Cultures on Thursday.

"I can assure you that whether you voted for him or you did not vote for him," the television report quoted him as saying of the president-elect, "if you are a citizen of the United States, he is your president. He will be your president, and if you do not like that, you need to go to another country."

He later told the station and the San Antonio Express-News that he meant his words to be unifying and respectful of the president's office, not political, and added that he did not vote for Trump …

‘London Fields’ Producers Sue Amber Heard for $10 Million

The producers of “London Fields” filed suit Monday against Amber Heard, the film’s star, accusing her of sabotaging the film and costing them more than $10 million.
The adaptation of Martin Amis’ dystopian novel remains in limbo more than a year after its disastrous debut at the Toronto International Film Festival. The director, Mathew Cullen, sued producers Chris Hanley and Jordan Gertner at the opening of the festival, accusing them of fraud. The premiere screening was cancelled, and the critics who managed to see it gave it scathing reviews.

Two months later, the producers counter-sued Cullin, accusing him of breaching his contract. Among other things, the producers alleged that Cullin went $4.5 million over his $8 million budget.

In the new lawsuit, the producers contend that Heard also conspired to sabotage the film, going so far as to campaign for its cancellation at Toronto. According to the suit, much of the conflict with Heard related to the issue of nudity. The prod…

Kanye West is reportedly under psychiatric evaluation at UCLA Medical Center after a string of odd behavior and mid-concert rants.
The rapper was being examined for severe sleep deprivation before paramedics were called around 4:20 p.m. Monday, according to TMZ.

Sources told NBC News that Kanye, 39, was hospitalized "for his own health and safety."
The "Famous" artist canceled the remainder of his "Saint Pablo Tour" following a recent string of bizarre rants and antics at recent shows. He had 21 concerts remaining on the North American leg of his sprawling tour, which he extended a few weeks ago beyond its original Nov. 2 end date.

Exhaustion played a major role in West's decision to nix the remainder of his gigs, a source told TMZ.
