Akufo-Addo swears-in Justice Akuffo as new Chief Justice
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has sworn in Justice Sophia Akuffo as the new Chief Justice.
She takes over from Justice Georgina Wood who retired this month
after she was appointed by President John Agyekum Kufuor in 2007.
Justice Akuffo was on Monday approved by Parliament by consensus.
Addressing parliament during the approval process, the Minority
leader Haruna Iddrisu declared their acceptance of Justice Akuffo saying
“we strongly support the president’s nominee and that she is competent
to work in that office.”
The president charged Justice Akuffo to ensure social justice and
uphold the rule of law at all times even if members of his government
break the law.
Present at the event held in Accra were former presidents Jerry John
Rawlings and John Agyekum Kufour, former Chief Justice Georgina Wood,
chiefs, ministers, and parliamentarians among others.
