Watch: Colin Kaepernick travels 'home' to Ghana to find his independence
Colin Kaepernick remains unfazed by the fact he remains unsigned by NFL teams.
The former 49ers quarterback tweeted a minute-long video Tuesday of a
trip he took to Cape Coast Castle, a former slave trade hub in Ghana,
and questioned the celebration of Independence Day in the U.S.
A longer post was shared via Instagram. How can we truly celebrate independence on a day that intentionally robbed our ancestors of theirs? To find my independence I went home. pic.twitter.com/hniYGJeLxG— Colin Kaepernick (@Kaepernick7) July 4, 2017
Kaepernick created controversy last season when he chose to kneel
during the playing of the "Star-Spangled Banner" as a way to protest
police brutality against minorities.
Born in Milwaukee and raised in California by white foster parents,
Kaepernick said he knelt during the national anthem because he would not
"stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black
people and people of color."
He has since said he would not continue his protest of the anthem
should he be signed. But NFL teams don't appear willing to take on what
could be a distraction despite Kaepernick's talent that most believe
exceeds that of other quarterbacks like Austin Davis, Ryan Fitzpatrick
and E.J. Manuel, who signed as free agents this offseason.
Clearly those signings have not caused Kaepernick to tone down his
political activism, but isn't he simply exercising the very freedoms
other Americans were celebrating in the form of beer, hot dogs and
fireworks?
