Video: Russian State Media Slam Morgan Freeman Over Investigation Video, Blame "Marijuana Use"

The actor was featured in a video accusing the Kremlin of an "attack" on the U.S. 

Russian state media have lashed back at Morgan Freeman over his appearance in the Committee to Investigate Russia's video, in which the veteran Hollywood actor says that the U.S. "came under attack by the Russian government."

Just about every state-controlled media in Russia reacted to the video, throwing accusations and abuse at Freeman.

Rossiya 24 network put up a caption saying "Hysterical Freeman" and brought in a panel of psychiatrists, one of whom explained the actor's appearance in the video by "a Messianic complex" that resulted from playing God or the president in several movies.

The network's anchor went even further, saying Freeman apparently had issues due to "excessive workload" and "marijuana use."

Film director Yuri Grymov, invited to comment on the video by the news show Vesti, said, "I think, the grandpa just got drunk." He dismissed Freeman's statements as "rubbish."

TV network Channel Five said that Freeman "lost millions of Russian fans in a moment" as he became an "American propaganda mouthpiece."

Another television network, TV Center, accused the video of being "propagandist" and "anti-Russian" and quoted Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov as saying that Freeman's statements were caused by "emotional strain."

The video featuring Freeman was published earlier this week by the Committee to Investigate Russia, a non-profit resource aiming "to spread information about Russia's involvement in the 2016 U.S. presidential election and its threat to the country's institutions."

Director Rob Reiner is on the organization's advisory committee.
