Ten-Year-Old Bullying Victim Commits Suicide After Fighting Video Goes Viral

Ten-year-old Ashawnty Davis came home from Sunrise Elementary School in Aurora, CO one day and hanged herself in her closet, according to KDVR. After two weeks in a coma, she passed away at Children’s Hospital Colorado.

Her parents feel that school authorities did not do enough to address the bullying issue involving their child.

“There was nothing done about it. When I got the call telling me that my daughter had been in a fight, they never gave me the opportunity to meet with the other parents to come to the bottom of the line,” her mother Latoshia Harris told KDVR.

Back in October, a video of Ashawnty confronting a bully and then fighting her went viral on social media.

“She was devastated when she found out that it had made it to Musical.ly,” her father Anthony Davis said.

Two weeks after the video went viral, the fifth grader acted on her suicidal thoughts. She spent two weeks on life support before she passed away on Nov. 29th.

Ms. Harris and Mr. Davis said they tried to arrange meeting with school faculty but their requests were denied. The district said the school claimed they were not aware of these requests.

“I could have taken her out of the school. It could have been different if she would have faced the girl,” Harris said.

The Cherry Creek School District spokesman said the school spoke with the children and their parents and also gave the video of the fight to the Aurora Police Department.
