A group of victims of horrific acid attacks in India took part in a fashion show to mark International Women's Day.

About eleven women who survived acid attacks took part in the fashion show which held in Thane, Mumbai, on Wednesday

According to the organizers, the show was aimed to raise awareness on the impact of violence against women in the country, and also calling on the government to end the sale of acid in India.

The photographs from the event show the women having their hair and makeup done before taking to the catwalk in colourful dresses.

Some of them spoke about regaining self-confidence after being left scarred in the brutal attacks.

One of the victims, Laxmi Agarwal, who was attacked at the age of 15 by a 32-year-old man whose marriage proposal she rejected, said:

'I swept aside notions about the face, which society spoke of, and moved forward in life.'
She added: 'We don't want respect, we want equality.'

While another victim, Deepmala Tiwary, who also took part in the show, said: 'What others think about us does not have relevance, what we think about ourselves is only what matters.'
