Make Adequate Preparations for Admission of Free SHS Graduates - President Akufo Addo to Universities

President Akufo Addo has charged newly sworn-in Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Madam Mary Chinery-Hesse and all other heads of tertiary institutions to as a matter of urgency, develop strategies in order to be able to admit free Senior High School (SHS) graduates who will be completing their studies in the next two years.

Delivering the keynote address at the induction ceremony of the new Chancellor of the University of Ghana at the Great Hall, President Akufo Addo noted that a lot of SHS graduates will obviously be turned out by Senior High Schools in the country. A clear plan for these graduands to pursue further education ought to be developed ahead of their passing out year.

To that end, the President urged the new Chancellor and her fellow heads of other universities to ensure that their plan of action will be long term. This he said should be the focus because the Free SHS Policy has come to stay as a "permanent feature in the educational architecture of Ghana and the country cannot afford to be caught off guard".

Chancellor Chinery Hesse

Mary Chinery Hesse, the new Chancellor was elected by the University of Ghana to replace H.E. Kofi Annan, as the school’s Chancellor. Mrs. Chinery-Hesse is an alumnus of the University of Ghana. She was also awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Laws (Honoris Causa) by the University of Ghana in 1991.

Mrs. Chinery-Hesse is a distinguished national and international public servant. She has also received several prestigious awards and decorations including the Order of the Star of Ghana in 2006, and the Gusi Peace Prize for International Diplomacy and Humanitarianism in 2010. She was Chief Advisor, to President John Agyekum Kufuor from May 2006 – January 2009. She served as a Member, Council of University of Ghana between 2006-2009. Additionally, she was Commissioner, Public Utilities Regulatory Commission, 2003 – 2006; Vice-Chairman, National Development Planning Commission, 2001 – 2009; Member, National Council for Higher Education,1974 -1980; first female Deputy Director-General, International Labour Organization (ILO) Geneva, 1989 – 2000 and Chairperson, UN Consultative Committee on Programme Operational Questions (CCPOQ), 1993 – 1998.
