Sierra Leone is Eternally Grateful for Ghana's Support - Outgoing High Commissioner

Outgoing High Commissioner of Sierra Leone to Ghana, Her Excellency Justice (Rtd) Umu H. Tejan-Jalloh, has stated that her country is eternally grateful to Ghana for all the Socioeconomic and Security support it has enjoyed over the last two years during which time she has served as High Commissioner of her country to Ghana.

Speaking at the Jubilee House when she paid a courtesy call on the President to bid Ghana farewell, High Commissioner Jalloh said the two years of her duty tour has seen Ghana assisting her country in several areas such as her socioeconomic and security needs. She recalled how Ghana actively supported, participated and contributed a sizeable contingent to the Economic Community of West African States Monitoring Group (ECOMOG) force during the rebel war in Sierra Leone as well as the contribution to the fight and eradication of the Ebola Virus disease when it broke out two years ago. She added that during the Ebola Outbreak, Ghana was one of a few countries who did not impose travel restrictions on citizens of Sierra Leone.

More recently, the High Commissioner said when her country suffered a devastating mud slide and flooding which resulted to the loss of thousands of human lifes, and the displacement of several families, Ghana was amongst the responders to the call for help by supplying tens of thousands of cedis worth of food, medicals, humanitarian items and cash donations to the government of Sierra Leone for victims of the disaster. The high powered delegation that delivered the items was led by the Vice President of the Republic, Mahamudu Bawumia, the High Commissioner recounted with deep appreciation for the gesture.

Ghana, Sierra Leone Health Partnership

On the health front, the High Commissioner expressed sincere thanks to the Doctors and other medical staff of the Korle Bu Teaching hospital who according her have served as the referral hospital for nearly 90% of all Sierra Leone medical cases that are referred abroad. To this end, she pledged that she will continue to champion the course of Ghana wherever she may find herself in the world as Ghana has become her second home.

The President's Response

President Akufo Addo in his response indicated that the connection between Ghana and Sierra Leone dates back even before independence and it is the existing relationship that informs the constant support Ghana has offered in the past. He assured that the relationship will continue, it will be deepened and strengthened going forward particularly as members of ECOWAS and the Commonwealth. He extended a hand of friendship and fellowship to the High Commissioner to visit with Ghana anytime she so pleases.
