Police reopen investigation into claim that Cristiano Ronaldo raped model in Las Vegas hotel room in 2009

Authorities in Las Vegas have reopened an investigation into the claim that Cristiano Ronaldo raped a model in a hotel room nine years ago.

34-year-old teacher Kathryn Mayorga, who was an aspiring model at the time of the alleged assault, claims Ronaldo raped her in a bathroom at the Palms Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas in the early hours of June 13, 2009.

This comes after Lawyers for the Portuguese star said on Friday that they would sue German magazine, Der Spiegel, after it published 'blatantly illegal' accusations by an American woman who alleges she was raped by the Juventus star nine years ago.

Ronaldo's lawyer Christian Schertz said in a statement that the report was 'an inadmissible reporting of suspicions in the area of privacy', and that he would seek legal redress for his client from the magazine

In the statement issued the Juventus striker denied Mayorga’s rape claim saying they would sue for “compensation for moral damages”.

His solicitor, Professor Dr. Christian Schertz said: “The reporting in SPIEGEL is blatantly illegal. It violates the personal rights of our client Cristiano Ronaldo in an exceptionally serious way.

“This is an inadmissible reporting of suspicions in the area of privacy. It would therefore already be unlawful to reproduce this reporting.

“We have been instructed to immediately assert all existing claims under press law against SPIEGEL, in particular, compensation for moral damages in an amount corresponding to the gravity of the infringement, which is probably one of the most serious violations of personal rights in recent years.”

The ex-Manchester United, 33, also spoke out in a video on Instagram just hours after her lawyer filed court documents about the case. Grinning into the camera, he said: 'No, no, no, no, no. What they said today? Fake, fake news.'

'They want to promote [themselves by using] my name. It's normal. They want to be famous to say my name, but it is part of the job. I am a happy man and all good.'

On Monday, Police announced the case was re-opened.
