Spending $450k & Paying $250k For 3 Years For AFRIMA Hosting Right Justifiable – Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Catherine Afeku Tells Critics

The Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Catherine Afeku has confirmed that her Ministry paid an amount of ($250,000) two hundred and fifty thousand dollars as three (3) hosting right for the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA).

The Minister stated during a Town Hall Meeting and lunch organized by the Creative Arts Council on December 19, 2018 that the 5th edition of the AFRIMA incurred a cost of four hundred and fifty thousand dollars ($450,000).

According to the Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister, it is in the best interest of the country to host such an event as this will help project Ghana to the world and pay for three years hosting right.

Afeku was displeased with the countless criticisms by entertainment critics claiming the huge amount and expenditure paid was exorbitant.

In her speech, she disclosed that the $450,000 expenses made was considerate regarding the flight costs of invited personalities from other countries, their accommodations, food and other miscellaneous costs.

“Ghana is always ready to host international Festivals so I plead with our art personalities to have the openness and gladly accept international festivals because doing International event isn’t a sin.
“Ghana isn’t a xenophobic country so let’s stop condemning international festivals held in our country,” Afeku said

She urged members of the arts fraternity to stop underestimating themselves and the Arts industry when they get the opportunity to host events for the diaspora to help project the country.

“A total of $250,000 was negotiated to be the amount to be paid as hosting right for three (3) years and an amount of $450,000 was the cost incurred during the AFRIMA event held in Ghana.” She added

However, the Minister’s hosting right claim seems contrary to an amount she mentioned some months ago during an interview on radio.

Speaking on Hitz FM on Friday, Catherine said this awards scheme is an opportunity for Ghana to boost its tourism and creative arts.

“Government is supporting the event with $4.5 million for the three years but for this year, we are spending $ 700,000,” she said.

She communicated that though the there were flaws concerning the organization of the AFRIMA event and being the first to be hosted in Ghana, all criticisms are welcomed but should be done with caution not to tarnish the Arts’ image.

She also stated that private companies after the AFRIMA event contacted the Ministry to be given right to organize the subsequent editions which her outfit is considering.

The Government of the Republic of Ghana accepted to officially host Country rights for the 5th All Africa Music Awards, AFRIMA-Ghana 2018 with the awards programme of activities scheduled to held from November 21 to November 24 in Accra, Ghana in partnership with the African Union Commission (AUC) and the International Committee of AFRIMA.
