3-week-old baby found in a handbag on sidewalk in South Africa

South African Police are searching for a woman after the rescue of a three-week-old baby girl on a sidewalk in Sunnyside on Monday evening. The baby was found in a handbag in Jorrissen Street.

Sunnyside police spokesperson captain Daniel Mavimbela said police were appealing to the public to help locate the woman known as Lebogang Botolo.

Mavimbela said Botolo could possibly help to advance the child-neglect investigation.

He said the baby is recovering in an incubator at a local hospital following her admission on Monday.

“When the police visited her at the hospital yesterday, the baby’s condition had vastly improved compared to the time when she was found,” said Mavimbela.

Mavimbela urged parents who did not wish to keep their new-born babies, to utilise the two “baby bins” available 24/7 on the corners of Spuy and Vos streets as well as Steve Biko and Jorrissen streets.

“Anyone who possibly knows of the whereabouts of Botolo may contact Warrant Officer Gerard Henning of the SAPS family violence, child protection and sexual offences unit on 071-675-7489 or contact the nearest police station.”
