“I’ll end Fulani menace” - Akufo-Addo assures Agogo residents

The 2016 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has assured residents of Agogo, in the Asante Akim North constituency, that when, God-willing, he is voted into office in this year’s elections, he will put in place measures to ensure that the ‘Fulani menace’ is curbed once and for all.

Agogo, in recent years, has arguably been the worst hit by the activities of Fulani herdsmen whose cattle have destroyed farmlands of farmers. This development has led to several clashes between the herdsmen and local farmers, resulting in the loss of lives.


This situation, according to Nana Akufo-Addo, is unacceptable as other countries across the world have put in place policies, which have meant that, such clashes have been forestalled.

“Brazil has a population of 200 million people, and 213 million cattle. There are more cattle in Brazil than human beings. However, ranching and the implementation of policies have ensured that this situation has not created any problems. Humans do not mingle with the cattle. These are the kinds of policies we are coming to put in place, when, God-willing, we win the elections, to ensure that this Fulani menace is ended once and for all,” he said.

The NPP flagbearer made this known on Sunday, July 17, when he ended his 5-day tour of the Ashanti Region, with a courtesy call on the Krontihene of Agogo, Nana Kwame Nti, who sat in state on behalf of the Agogohene, Nana Akuoko Sarpong.

Nana Akufo-Addo also assured that the issue of unsolved murders in Agogo, as a result of the clashes, which has led to some people taking the law into their own hands will be a thing of the past.

“We must make sure that the law is enforced. We are coming to strengthen and equip the Ghana Police Service with the requisite tools, and also enhanced conditions of service to ensure that they carry out the law to the latter. When someone does wrong, that person must be punished without fear or favour,” he added.

Agogo Tomato processing plant

With the mainstay of Agogo residents being tomato farming, Nana Akufo-Addo reiterated his message of helping to establish a factory in the Asante Akim district.

“In Agogo, this announcement shouldn’t surprise you because the late Kojo Baah Wiredu put in place plans to ensure that he was going to help set up a tomato factory in Asante Akim. We are going to make sure we turn this dream into reality, so we can help create jobs for the teeming masses of unemployed youth of this town,” he said.

He continued, “Let no one deceive you that we can’t do this. The late Kojo Baah Wiredu put in place plans for the establishment of the tomato factory. Whatever he put in place, we are going to continue it and bring into to fruition.”

Ghanaians are suffering

The teacher and nursing training allowances, which have been scrapped by the Mahama government, Nana Akufo-Addo noted, will be reintroduced by his government.

Like many, the NPP flagbearer wondered why “President Kufuor, who did not benefit from oil revenues, had the money to pay the allowances. However, President Mahama, with oil, has cancelled the allowances, because he says there is no money. I am going to restore the teacher training and nursing training allowances.”

Ghanaians, he added “are suffering, and there is too much hardship in the country. Everything has become difficult in Ghana. Parents can no longer give their children a decent living. Everything is in a mess. Ghanaians can no longer pay their electricity bills.”

The workings of Ghana’s Constitution, the NPP flagbearer stated, has given the Ghanaian electorate the opportunity, this year, “to take away all the hardship and give Ghanaians an NPP government which will bring progress, jobs and prosperity to all.

“I came here to appeal to all three constituencies in Asante Akim to vote massively for the NPP, and send a clear message that Ghanaians are ready to change their circumstances of living.”

Agogo supports you

On behalf of the Chiefs and people of Agogo, the Krontihene of Agogo, Nana Kwame Nti, assured the NPP flagbearer of the unflinching support of the people of Agogo, towards his cause of returning Ghana onto the path of progress and prosperity.

“We support you, whether in the day or at night. Whatever you have set upon yourself to achieve this year, we are in total support of you. There is a saying, ‘it is only he who embarks on a good journey who is supported and encouraged’. Nana, we are in suffering and slavery. Nana help us,” he appealed.

The Krontihene was elated by Nana Akufo-Addo’s pledge of helping to establish a factory in the Asante Akim district, explaining that “it will be of immense benefit to the populace, because the cultivation of tomatoes and plantain happens to be the mainstay of the residents of Agogo.”

He urged all supporters of the NPP to emulate the conduct of the NPP flagbearer, by using decorous language in their discourse and desist from all forms of violent acts in the run-up to the 2016 elections, stressing that “once you exhibit patience, you only end up drawing more people to your cause.”

With Alan Kyerematen accompanying the NPP flagbearer to the Agogohene’s palace, Nana Kwame Nti stated that “the talk of disunity in the NPP cannot be true, because I have seen Alan Kyerematen here with my own eyes, campaigning with Nana Akufo-Addo.”
