Finger chopped off in Asunafo South NPP, NDC attacks; Police flee

Persistent clashes between members of the New Patriotic Party and the governing National Democratic Congress during the voter transfer exercise in the Asunafo South Constituency of the Bono Ahafo region have left scores injured, offices vandalised and the exercise suspended.

One person, in Sankore said to be a supporter of the New Patriotic Party had his finger chopped off in the latest attack, Sunday, Joy News' Bono Ahafo correspondent Precious Semevoh reported.

The NPP has blamed the attacks on the NDC.

According to the Director of Communications at the Electoral Commission, Eric Dzakpasu the feuding factions destroyed equipment, including voter management software, laptops and other materials.

The District Assembly office in the  Constituency was also not spared the vandalism, reports suggested.

Eric Dzakpasu said the EC has been left with no choice than to suspend the registration exercise, at least for now, until the Commission is able to acquire new equipment after which genuine electorate who wish to transfer their votes will be attended to.

Asked about the security arrangement put in place before the transfer exercise, the EC Director of Communications said nobody anticipated that the transfer exercise would turn bloody.

He said the few police officers detailed to the place were outnumbered and had to flee for their lives when the attacks escalated.

According to him there has been a committee instituted to investigate the cause of the attacks and the committee is expected to give its findings to the Commission.

Meanwhile, the NPP parliamentary aspirant for Asunafo South George Boakye has said his supporters will be forced to retaliate if the spate of attacks on his members do not stop.

He believes the police have done little or nothing at all to protect them in the constituency.
