The Columbus Dispatch on Sunday broke with 100 years of tradition, endorsing Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton for president.
The Ohio newspaper in an
editorial said the choice was not pleasant.
"Like millions of Americans, The Dispatch editorial board has asked this question more than once: How, in a nation of more than 300 million people, did we end up with two such disliked and distrusted presidential candidates?" editors asked.
But they added that their decision was not difficult.
"Republican candidate Donald Trump is unfit to be president of the United States. Democrat Hillary Clinton, despite her flaws, is well-equipped for the job."
The Dispatch has traditionally endorsed Republican presidential candidates. In fact, the last time it endorsed a Democrat was in 1916, when it backed Woodrow Wilson's reelection bid.
But the newspaper's editors said Trump does not "espouse or support" traditional Republican values. Editors also called the billionaire a "liar of epic proportions," a bigot and a braggart.
The Dispatch also said third-party votes could help Trump win the White House.
In its endorsement, editors pointed to Clinton's history as first lady, senator and secretary of state and her focus on families, women and children.
They note, however, that the paper does not embrace all elements of her platform.
"Her calls for higher taxes, unsustainable spending and the likelihood that she will try to stack the U.S. Supreme Court with a left-leaning majority are unwelcome," the wrote, adding that the negatives pale when measured against the "dangers posed by Trump."
"The stakes are too high to sit out this election and risk letting Trump misuse the awesome power of the presidency. The Dispatch urges voters to elect Hillary Clinton."
