Report: Lamar Odom checks into rehab

Lamar Odom has checked into rehab, PEOPLE has learned. A source confirmed to PEOPLE that the former NBA star is seeking treatment at a rehabilitation center. “Lamar is in good spirits,” the source tells PEOPLE.

“Lamar checked into rehab a week ago. He plans to stay for 30 days. It’s a substance abuse program, but he was not abusing drugs when he went in. He is clean. This is a precautionary measure,” an insider says of Odom’s decision.

“He wants to stay clear and focused. With the divorce from Khloé being finalized and the holidays coming up, he doesn’t want to slip up. He’s trying to take care of himself. He really wants to be better,” the insider adds. “His friends and family encouraged him to go in and he agreed and made the decision.”

The news comes at a significant time: Odom’s protracted divorce from estranged ex-wife Khloé Kardashian will officially be legally finalized this week.

Odom, 37, and Kardashian, 32, tied the knot on national TV in September 2009. The marriage fell apart after Odom’s cheating scandal and drug relapse, and Kardashian first filed for divorce in 2013. The stars finally both signed divorce papers in July 2015, but a few months later, Kardashian called off their divorce following Odom’s near-fatal overdose in October 2015.

Kardashian reinitiated divorce proceedings in May, and according to court documents obtained last week by PEOPLE, Kardashian and Odom’s marriage will be legally terminated on Saturday.

After spending time back home in New York City this summer — where he was was often spotted out at bars and strip clubs — Odom has since returned to Los Angeles, where he’s maintained a relatively low profile.

Most recently, a source told PEOPLE it’s been “a great thing” for the former basketball star to be back in L.A.

“He’s away from the negative influences in New York,” said the source in November, after Odom celebrated his 37th birthday at home with friends and family.

“Everyone who knows and loves him just wants him to get back to his old self, but that will still take some time,” added the insider. “He’s been through a lot and he’s still working on himself.”
