Cable cars failure traps dozens over French Alps

About 60 people remain stuck on a series of cable cars high above the glaciers of Mont Blanc in the French Alps, officials say.
They say initially 110 people were trapped, but 50 were later airlifted out by helicopters. The operation was suspended as night fell.
The cable cars were at "an altitude of about 3,800m (12,468ft)", officials in the Haute-Savoie region said.

The problem was caused by cables that got crossed for "unknown reasons".
"We succeeded in evacuating, in very difficult conditions, 60 people in an hour-and-a-half," the prefect of the Haute-Savoie region, Georges-Francois Leclerc, told AFP news agency.
"We had to suspend the air transport rescue at nightfall," he added.
It is unclear when the rescue operation will resume.
Mathieu Dechavanne, the head of the cable company, said earlier that the authorities were "in contact with the clients [in the cable cars]".
"They have water and some means of communication but are …

Video: Mahama is 'hoodwinking' Ghanaians with achievements – Bawumia

Vice Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has watered down the achievements of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).

He says President John Mahama is “hoodwinking” Ghanaians by citing some supposed achievements when in fact he has achieved less relative to the amount of money borrowed for infrastructural projects.

“If you compare the sum the total cost of infrastructure expenditure from loans from taxes, and from grants from 2009 to 2016 it is less than $7 billion meanwhile the government has borrowed $39 billion,” she said, quizzing, “So where is the rest of the money?”

The astute Ghanaian economist made this disclosure during a public lecture held at the National Theatre under the theme “The State of the Ghana Economy – A Foundation of Concrete or Straw.”

At his campaign tours, President Mahama has described his achievement as unprecedented achievements unparallel in the history of Ghana.

Election 2016: Presidential candidates to pay Gh¢50k filing fee

Presidential candidates for the 2016 elections will be paying Gh¢50, 000 as filing fee, the Electoral Commission has announced.

The 500 per cent increment was announced during an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting Thursday.

According to sources, “majority of the parties protested the figure, but the EC said it can’t promise a reduction.”

Four years ago, presidential candidates paid Gh¢10, 000 as nomination fee.

Parliamentary candidates will also be paying Gh¢ 10,000 as against the Gh¢1,000 paid in the last elections. The new figure is a 1,000 per cent increment from the previous amount.

The Electoral Management Body has slated September 13 for both presidential and parliamentary candidates to pick nomination forms from the Electoral Commission. The forms are to be submitted between September 29 and 30, 2016.

Finance Minister peddled untruths on debt to GDP- Bawumia

The Vice Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party has accused the Finance Minister Seth Terkper of peddling untruths in the debt to GDP figure he released during his supplementary budget in July.
Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, at a lecture on the country's economy, Thursday, said the minister did not only provide false figures but could not also account for a whopping amount of 1.7 billion cedis spent.
Minister Seth Terkper in July this year went to Parliament with a supplementary budget during which he requested an amount of  GHȻ1.98 billion to finance activities by government.

Apart from the money he requested for, the Minister said Ghana’s economy grew by 4.9% in the first quarter of 2016 as compared to 4.5% in 2015.

He also stated that the public debt had decreased from 72% at the end of 2015 to 63% at the end of May 2016.
Based on the giant strides made in the economic management, Seth Terkper told MPs, Ghana’s economy is transitioning from a low-income status to a middle…

Turkey-PKK conflict: Thousands of teachers suspended

More than 11,000 teachers in Turkey have been suspended for alleged links to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), a week before children go back to school.
Prime Minister Binali Yildirim had said he thought as many as 14,000 teachers were associated with terror activities.

Turkey, alongside Western countries, regards the PKK as terrorists.
Tens of thousands of school workers and private teachers were purged separately after a failed coup in July.
Tens of thousands of people have died in a decades-long insurgency by the PKK, who want more self-rule for Kurdish people.
Turkey's education ministry said 11,285 teachers had been suspended and were on paid leave pending an investigation.
The state-run Anadolu news agency said they were suspected of activities "in support of the separatist terrorist organisation and its affiliates".
It also said the number was meant to grow to 14,000 after an investigation carried out alongside local governors' offices.

Akufo-Addo Outlines Policy Interventions For Job Creation

The 2016 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has outlined comprehensive policy measures aimed at strengthening the prospects of accelerated enterprise development in a competitive environment and stimulating the rapid growth and expansion of the Ghanaian economy, so that the all-important issue of job creation can be successfully addressed.

According to World Bank statistics, about 48% of Ghanaians between the ages of 15 and 24 are unemployed, whilst over 18% of those aged between 25 and 64 years are inactive or unemployed and actively looking for job.
This unprecedented high level of unemployment, in the view of the NPP flagbearer, is “the greatest challenge confronting our nation, particularly amongst the youth”, and addressing this matter, he added, is the only way by which we “can then guarantee the peace and stability of our nation.”
Nana Akufo-Addo made this known on Thursday, September 8, 2016, when he addressed the 57th Ann…

Mahama, Nana Addo behaving like kids – Nduom

The flagbearer of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, has chided President John Mahama and the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP,) Nana Akufo-Addo over what he describes as “children politics” being resorted to by the two.

Dr. Nduom said Mahama’s recent interview with Metro TV did not amuse him and likened the banter between the two leaders to how children behave in crèche or kindergarten.

“Akufo-Addo talked about Mahama insulting him… calling him a dictator, Mahama said Akufo-Addo called him a thief… incompetent. What is presidential about this? When they are done with this, they will go and say this is just politics. Is that the kind of politics we need?” the business magnate said in his latest campaign video.

He added: “…Have we forgotten about ‘dumsor’, unemployment, lack of potable water, people who are suffering from cholera and malaria?”

The entrpreneur said the two can pretend and go about saying they will not campaign with each other’…

US media firm Liberty Media to buy Formula 1

US firm Liberty Media has confirmed it is buying the racing business Formula 1 for $4.4bn (£3.3bn). The move ends years of speculation about the ownership of the company.

Bernie Ecclestone will remain as chief executive but Chase Carey, vice-chairman of 21st Century Fox, will become the new chairman.

Liberty Media has stakes in several sports and entertainment businesses, including the Atlanta Braves Major League Baseball club.

Owned by the billionaire John Malone, Liberty will initially purchase a minority stake in the world's leading motor-racing championship. A full takeover is planned if regulators approve the deal.

The total transaction values the firm at $8bn but includes $4.1bn worth of F1's debt.

Liberty Media is buying the stake from the private equity firm CVC Capital.

CVC has held a stake for the past decade but sold some of its holding in 2012.

It has been criticised for taking considerable profits from the sport, which has suffered from falling TV ratings in rece…

Gyan lied over medical status - Jaap Stam

Reading manager Jaap Stam has confirmed striker Asamoah Gyan failed a medical at the club, leading to the ruined loan move.

The Black Stars captain debunked those stories claiming Reading wanted to stop him from playing for Ghana during the AFCON 2017 in Gabon.

But Stam has labelled that claim as ‘rubbish’.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday afternoon at Hogwood Park, the Dutchman said the club would have been happy to let the 30-year-old head off on international duty, providing he was fit.

“Yes, he wasn’t in very good shape. When he joined us they did a very good medical on him which was very important because he’s been injured in the past”.
“He hasn’t been playing a lot of games”.

“You need to be sure, if you bring a player in, that he’s fit and not that you need to work him for six to eight weeks to get him in shape”.

“And maybe there’s a risk of him getting injured during that period so he’s out for a longer time”.

“And then he needs to go to Ghana in January and we los…

I Admire Prez Mahama's Honesty - Asabee

President John Mahama's admission that his government cannot deliver the 200 Community Day Senior High Schools before the end of his first tenure is admirable, former Information Minister Stephen Asamoah Boateng has said.
President Mahama in the heat of the 2012 general elections pledged to build 200 community day schools in his first term.

However, he admitted on Monday that he cannot complete all the 200 community day schools he promised, explaining that 123 schools were in various stages of completion confirming perceptions by doubters.

“In my next term of office, by the grace of God, we will complete all the 200 new senior High Schools that I promised,” said President Mahama.

Mr. Boateng applauding the president’s frankness said “sincerity is missing from our politics which is sad.”

Toronto film festival spotlights diversity

The Toronto International Film Festival opens later with a raft of films that will spotlight the ongoing diversity debate in Hollywood.
Nearly 400 films will screen at the 11-day event in Canada's largest city.
Thursday's opening film is Antoine Fuqua's reboot of the 1960 western classic The Magnificent Seven, with a starry cast lead by Denzel Washington.
The festival, now in its 41st year, has a reputation as a launch pad for films that go on to Oscars success.

After this year's #OscarsSoWhite backlash, Toronto will premiere a number of movies exploring racial themes that are already gaining awards season buzz.
Most, of course, were already in production well before the furore that saw bosses at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which awards the Oscars, take a number of steps to make its membership more diverse.
When the Toronto programme was announced in July, its artistic director Cameron Bailey said it contained "global voice, transforma…

I Can’t Think Far; I Can't Think Madness – Prez Mahama Mocks NPP

President John Dramani Mahama is baffled at the continuous claim by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) that he has done nothing in his four-year tenure.

If the is not mischief, the President said he cannot fathom why in spite of the unprecedented infrastructural development across the country, opposition parties are refusing to see and appreciate it.
President Mahama expressed these sentiments while addressing the chiefs and people of Cape Coast as part of his tour of the Central region Wednesday.

The President was left with no other option than to use the popular phrase of comedian Lil Win ‘I can’t think far; I can’t think madness’ to soothe his pain.
