Thousands attend funeral of Brazil soap star Montagner

Thousands of people in Brazil have attended the funeral of soap opera star Domingos Montagner who died in tragic circumstances on Thursday.
Montagner drowned in the river where the crew had been recording scenes for Brazil's most popular soap opera.
His death has caused shock and consternation in the country, where millions watch TV soaps every evening.
The 54-year-old played the leading role in Velho Chico, which was named after the Sao Francisco river where he died.
He was swimming with fellow actress Camila Pitanga when he got dragged away by strong currents.
She cried for help but local residents in the north-eastern state of Sergipe initially believed the drowning was a scene in the soap opera.
But the authorities said there was nothing anyone could have done.
"They thought they had chosen a safe spot to swim but that is one of the most dangerous areas in the town of Caninde and usually avoided by locals," police chief Antonio Francisco Filho told O Globo.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu back in South African hospital

Archbishop Desmond Tutu has been readmitted to a South African hospital after he started showing signs of infection after surgery he had earlier this month, his family said Saturday.
The 84-year-old Nobel laureate had spent three weeks in a Cape Town hospital, from last month until Wednesday, to receive treatment for a recurring infection, and he had minor surgery to address the issue.

On Saturday, his wife, Leah, said that the surgical wound itself was showing signs of infection.
Tutu underwent hospital tests for a persistent infection in 2013. A year later, he canceled travel plans because of a long-running battle with prostate cancer, first diagnosed in 1997.

Tutu, the first black archbishop of Cape Town, received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 for his efforts to end apartheid. In his later years, he has remained active with the Desmond Tutu Peace Foundation and other organizations.

Tutu played a key role in South Africa's transition from the apartheid era, including serv…

Nigeria's Buhari admits line plagiarised from Obama

Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari plagiarised quotes from US President Barack Obama in a speech promising change in the West African country, according to a statement by his office.
Buhari made the address last week to launch a campaign entitled "Change begins with me," part of his credo to end corruption in Africa's biggest economy, which is gripped by mismanagement and poverty despite sitting on vast energy reserves.
However, his office said on Friday that a paragraph in the speech urging Nigerians not to fall back "on the same partisanship, pettiness and immaturity that have poisoned our country so long" was copied from Obama's victory speech after his election in November 2008.

"It was observed that the similarities between a paragraph in President Obama's 2008 victory speech and what President Buhari read in paragraph nine of the 16-paragraph address ... are too close to be passed as coincidence," his office said in a state…

Nana Akufo Addo ‘Mocked In Coffin’ At NDC Manifesto Launch (PHOTO)

Some supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), on Saturday, converged on the Sunyani Coronation Park for the party’s manifesto launch, but had various objects to showcase, including a coffin, embossed with the pictures of the NPP Flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo.
It is unclear what message the supporters were seeking to communicate, particularly when some persons in the ruling party, have attempted to use the health status of Nana Addo as a campaign tool. The party has also said they will retire Nana Addo this year, to kill his dreams of leading the country.

Although President Mahama has stated categorically that he will not campaign on anybody’s health status, some supporters of his party, have suggested that Nana Addo is not healthy to prosecute a vigorous campaign, let alone lead the country.

The speculations deepened when the Africa Watch Magazine recently published a report alleging that Nana Addo has caner. Nana Addo’s personal physician has however denied the …

US election: Clinton security should be disarmed, says Trump

Republican US presidential candidate Donald Trump is facing criticism after appearing to hint at the assassination of his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton for a second time.
Mr Trump suggested Mrs Clinton's security detail should give up their guns and "see what happens to her".
He told supporters his rival wanted to "destroy your second amendment" - referring to the right to own guns. Mrs Clinton's team has accused Mr Trump of "inciting people to violence".
Speaking at a rally in Miami on Friday, the Republican candidate said, apparently sarcastically: "I think that her bodyguards should drop all weapons. They should disarm, right?

"Take their guns away, she doesn't want guns. Take their guns and let's see what happens to her. Take their guns away. OK, it would be very dangerous."
Robby Mook, a spokesman for Mrs Clinton, said: "Whether this is done to provoke protesters at a rally or casually or even as a joke, it i…

US playwright Edward Albee dies aged 88

US playwright Edward Albee, the author of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, has died aged 88.
Albee's assistant said he died on Friday at his home on Long Island near New York. No cause of death was given.
A three-time Pulitzer Prize winner, he was arguably America's greatest living playwright after the deaths of Arthur Miller and August Wilson in 2005,
Albee was awarded Pulitzers for A Delicate Balance, Seascape and Three Tall Women.

Often bleakly humorous, his plays explored the darker sides of marriage, religion, raising children, and American life.
His best-known work, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, a portrait of a decaying marriage set over one evening, was denied the 1963 Pulitzer Prize after debuting on Broadway the previous year.
The prize's advisory board ruled that the work was not sufficiently "uplifting" because of its profanity and sexual themes.
The work did win a Tony Award for best play, and was later adapted for a film starring Richard B…

Theresa May could begin Brexit process by February, says Tusk

UK Prime Minister Theresa May is likely to trigger the formal process of leaving the European Union early next year, according to a top EU official.
European Council President Donald Tusk said Mrs May had told him the UK could be ready to begin talks by February.
The BBC's Tom Bateman says this is the clearest sign yet of when the two-year withdrawal process may start.

Mrs May's office said it would not be launched this year, but did not confirm Mr Tusk's account.
Formal negotiations over the withdrawal cannot begin until the UK triggers Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, the formal mechanism for leaving the union.
The timing of the process has so-far been clouded by uncertainty, with no clear signal from Mrs May's government on when it would begin.
There is also confusion over the nature of the the UK's future relationship with the bloc, especially whether it intends to remain a member of the single market.
Mr Tusk spoke from the Slovakian capital, Bratislava, whe…
