Dolly Parton heartbroken by wildfires torching her hometown

Country music icon Dolly Parton says she's heartbroken about wildfires that tore through the Tennessee county where she grew up, but spared the Dollywood theme park that bears her name.
In a statement released Tuesday by her publicists, Parton said she's been watching the "terrible fires" in the Great Smoky Mountains. At least 14,000 people have been forced to evacuate the tourist area of Gatlinburg, Tennessee, and a dozen people have been injured in the wildfires.

"I am praying for all the families affected by the fire and the firefighters who are working so hard to keep everyone safe," she said.

In a video released just hours before the wildfires engulfed Gatlinburg and areas around Pigeon Forge, Parton urged people to prevent forest fires.
Parton appears with Smokey the Bear in the 30-second video released Sunday by Great Smoky Mountains National Park. She tells people to avoid burning leaves and parking vehicles on dry grass, and warns that even a…

Mahama bribed NPP Northern Region chair with cars, cash to denigrate Akufo-Addo- NPP alleges

The New Patriotic Party has uncovered what it says is a grand plot, a carefully orchestrated scheme by the first family to bribe  leading and influential members of the party to paint the NPP leader as an ethnic bigot and an anti-northern person.
Addressing a press conference in Accra, Tuesday, Moustapha Hamid, spokesperson of the NPP leader Nana Akufo-Addo, made damning allegations of bribery against president John Mahama and his brother Ibrahim Mahama- claims we cannot independently confirm, at least for now.

According to him, an offer of a brand new V6 Mitsubishi,  a brand new V8 Landcruiser and a promise of ¢3.3 million was made to Bugri Naabu, the Northern Regional Chair of the NPP in a meeting held on October 28, 2016.
A contractor of repute, owed to the tune of ¢247,000 cedis by the state for jobs done in the past, Mr Naabu was promised payment by the two powerful men if he were to play ball.
The offer was to induce Bugri Naabu to "resign from the NPP and damage Ak…

World's oldest living person celebrates 117th birthday

Italy's Emma Morano, the world's oldest living person, marked her 117th birthday Tuesday, blowing out all the candles on her cake.
Beaming at the attention, Morano took in the festivities for her milestone celebration sitting in an armchair in her one-room apartment in the northern town of Verbania, joined by her two elderly nieces, a pair of caregivers and her long-time physician.

She received a greeting from Italy's president, read by an official, wishing her "serenity and good healthy," and appeared for a brief live broadcast on state-run television. She happily accepted some gifts, including her favorite cookies, which she ate with some milk.

Then she blew out the candles on her cake — not one for every year, but three numerals to show her age, 117 — and quipped: "I hope I don't have to cut it!"

To the assembled well-wishers, Morano said, "I am happy to turn 117," and drew encouragement from her physician, Dr. Carlo Bava.

Cameroon into women's Nations Cup final

Hosts Cameroon booked their place in the final of the women's Africa Cup of Nations with a 1-0 win over Ghana.
A scrappy goal on 71 minutes, when Raissa Feudijo finally scored after Njoya Ajara's effort had been cleared off the line, proved decisive.
In the first half, Cameroon's Aboudi Gabrielle Ongeune hit the post but there were few other chances.

Late in the match, they almost made it 2-0 but Michelle Ngono Mani's shot was tipped on to the bar and over.
Ghana's substitute keeper Patricia Mantey, who came on after Ama Nana Asantewa was stretchered off with a head injury, made the save but the result was already beyond the Black Queens.

Cameroon, who have lost in the final three times, will face the winner of Tuesday's later game between South Africa and Nigeria.
The Indomitable Lionesses will take heart from their semi-final performance, having battled hard to overcome Ghana - and perhaps they might have may have won by a bigger margin.
With every seat occ…
