Wole Soyinka destroys his Green Card as promised

Nobel prize-winning author Wole Soyinka today revealed that he has fulfilled his pledge to throw away his US residency green card if Donald Trump won the presidential election.
"I have already done it, I have disengaged from the United States. I have done what I said I would do," Soyinka told AFP on the sidelines of an education conference at the University of Johannesburg. "I had a horror of what is to come with Trump... I threw away the (green) card, and I have relocated, and I'm back to where I have always been."However, Soyinka said he would not discourage others from applying for a green card. "It's useful in many ways. I wouldn't for one single moment discourage any Nigerians or anybody from acquiring a green card... but I have had enough of it," he said.

Kanye West 911 call: 'He's definitely going to need to be hospitalized'

When a 911 call came in, apparently from Kanye West's doctor, about an incident involving the rapper at a Los Angeles home, the dispatcher advised: "Don't let him get any weapons."
The details of the 911 call made from a home in the 900 block of North Laurel Avenue, released Thursday to The Times in accordance with public records laws, provide new insight into what led to the rapper's hospitalization for more than a week.

The phone call recording, which does not specifically identify West or include West's voice, indicates a level of concern by those around him that he seek professional help.

A man who identified himself to a dispatcher as "one of his doctors" quickly requested police backup as well as paramedics.

"I think, he's definitely going to need to be hospitalized," the caller said. "I wouldn't just do the police by itself."
A dispatcher later asks: "What is the medical condition he's having, sir?&quo…

Trump assembles America's 'richest cabinet'

US President-elect Donald Trump took a populist tone on the campaign trail, pledging to stand for a beleaguered working class abandoned by the elite.
Yet, as he selects his cabinet, observers are already pointing out that he is putting together the richest administration in US history.

So far, his choices include a billionaire investor, a woman who married into a retail dynasty and a multi-millionaire banker.
Democrats have been quick to the attack. "Donald Trump's administration: of, by and for the millionaires and billionaires," tweeted Bernie Sanders, a Vermont senator who ran for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Mr Trump, of course, brings immense wealth to his new role. The property tycoon's worth is estimated at $3.7bn (£3bn) by Forbes magazine, with more than 500 businesses in his empire.
But he might not be the richest member of his team. His nominee for education secretary, Betsy Devos, is the daughter-in-law of Richard DeVos, who founded the A…

Drake is Spotify's most-streamed artist of 2017

Drake has been named Spotify's most-streamed artist of 2017, with his single One Dance the site's biggest song of the year.
The Canadian star racked up 4.7 billion streams this year, more than half of which were for his album Views.
That's despite the album being withheld from Spotify for two weeks as part of a deal with Apple Music.
One Dance alone was streamed 960 million times. Played consecutively, that would take more than 5,200 years.
The song's popularity on streaming services - including Deezer and Google Play as well as Spotify and Apple - helped it spend 15 weeks on top of the official UK singles chart, the longest run since Bryan Adams Everything I Do (I Do It For You) in 1991.
It is now Spotify's most-streamed song of all time, earning Drake and his co-writers an estimated $4.8m (£3.9m) in royalties.
Rihanna - who counts Drake as a collaborator and boyfriend - was Spotify's most-streamed female artist of 2016, while former One Direction star Zayn …

Lifestyle: HR Today: Elections - Employees civic responsibility

The sovereignty of every nation is in the hands of its citizens. It is therefore assumed that every worker in the country - be it employees in the private and public sectors are entitled to vote provided he/she is a registered voter. Some organisations do not allow its employees to participate in active partisan politics for many good reasons.

However, some institutions do not really bother their employees with what they do with their time outside of the working environment once it does not compromise their performance and put the company’s brand and goodwill in bad light.

It is however not advisable to be engaged in active partisan politics in the office setting, by either displaying party paraphernalia, discussing party activities in the office or during working hours. Every employee has the civic responsibility to exercise his/her franchise as enshrined in the 1992 constitution.

Management and Human Resource practitioners should ensure that there is a comprehensive policy …

2016 polls: Journalists, security officers, others vote today

Over one hundred thousand Ghanaians will today head to designated polling stations in Ghana to cast their ballot in a Special Voting exercise ahead of the main polls next week.

The special Voting will be taking place in some 275 polling stations across the country.
Meanwhile, there have been concerns over the list realesed for the exercise by the electoral commission.

In the Volta and Northern regions, some security personnel have complained of missing names, among others. The EC is yet to comment on such concerns.

Special voting is a special dispensation under the electoral laws that allows registered voters who will not be able to present themselves at their polling stations on voting day as a result of the roles they will play in the elections to vote on a date before the rest of the electorate vote on the date set for the elections.

The category of people who are allowed to do special voting are security personnel, officials of the EC and journalists.
