Dolly Parton’s Telethon Raised ‘Millions’ for Tennessee Wildfire Victims

Dolly Parton‘s three-hour telethon to raise money for the victims of the Tennessee wildfires on Tuesday evening raised “millions,” according to the country music star, who did not disclose the exact amount.  The ‘Jolene’ singer, a Tennessee native born in Sevier County, established a relief fund earlier this month to held those who lost their homes in the Great Smoky Mountain wildfire that ravaged through part of Tennessee, destroying more than 2,400 houses and businesses and killing 14 people. The “My People Fund” will give families affected by the fire $1,000 per month for six months, to help them get back on their feet.

During a televised special aired live from Nashville on Tuesday, dozens of country music legends performed on stage and answered phones. The Academy of Country Music, Taylor Swift and Paul Simon each donated $100,000, and the Tennessee Titans gave $144,270, WDTN reports.

Parton’s telethon goal was to raise $13 million, and she said the final amount raised i…

Police just outside Atlanta say a notorious 86-year-old jewel thief has struck again. Dunwoody police say Doris Payne was arrested Tuesday at a Von Maur department store. A police report says Payne put a $2,000 necklace in her back pocket and tried to leave the store.
Authorities have said Payne has lifted pricey baubles from countless jewelry stores around the world in an illicit career that has spanned six decades. She was the subject of a 2013 documentary, "The Life and Crimes of Doris Payne."

When asked about her exploits in an interview with The Associated Press earlier this year, she said simply: "I was a thief."

Online jail records did not show any bond information, and it wasn't immediately clear whether Payne had an attorney who could comment.

Amber Heard, through her lawyers, has filed a document against her ex-husband, Johnny Depp, for refusing to follow through on the divorce settlement agreed upon.

It has been gathered that Johnny Depp’s reason for stalling is because he feels Amber Heard broke the terms of their divorce settlement by speaking publicly about domestic violence.
In a letter written by Heard for the December issue of the fashion magazine, Porter, the actress wrote about domestic violence and female empowerment, alluding to her personal experiences. Part of the letter read;  "You are not alone. You may have suffered alone behind closed doors, but you are not alone. You need to know that. I want to remind you of your strength, a strength that has been multiplied by the number of women who stand silently behind you - a truth that allowed me to break down the doors I once found myself behind." She added:  'I never felt anyone would or could rescue me, so naturally I resented the label of…

Kanye West Might Perform at Donald Trump’s Inauguration, but Garth Brooks Won’t

Donald Trump’s effort to line up talent for the inauguration has been stymied by the fact that so many musicians, artists, and entertainers supported Hillary Clinton.
But the New York Post reported that Andrea Bocelliwas being “personally approached” by Trump to perform at the inauguration. A representative for Bocelli did not return a request for comment.
He is among a number of musicians who are being asked to perform at inaugural events. Trump’s inaugural committee sent out packets to potential donors outlining a series of events in the days preceding the event, including a concert on the National Mall. The committee has not yet announced a complete lineup of events.

Meanwhile, sources say that Garth Brooks will not perform at the inaugural, after reports last week that he was among those being eyed by the inaugural committee. Asked by TMZ earlier this month if he would perform at the inauguration, Brooks said that he had not been asked yet, but said, “It’s always about se…

DR Congo postpone football league until further notice

The government in DR Congo has told the country's football association to suspend league competition from Thursday until further notice.
The move comes amidst fears that the end of President Joseph Kabila's mandate next week will spark violence.
"This general situation in the country risks spilling into the stadiums," Barthelemy Okito, secretary-general of the sports ministry, said.

One popular chant heard at games warns Kabila that his mandate is over.
Kabila is required by constitutional term limits to step down on 19 December but he has said he plans to stay on until at least April 2018, the earliest the government says an election originally planned for last month can be organised.
His opponents accuse him of deliberately delaying the vote to cling to power - a charge he denies - and have vowed street protests to force him from office.
More than 50 people died in demonstrations in September over election delays and there are fears protests this month could spark…

Putin's dog gives Japanese journalists an earful

Two Japanese journalists grimaced as Putin brought his dog Yume into the room before an interview Wednesday.
With the presidential pool cameras clicking, the 4-year-old Akita began to bark loudly at the visiting journalists, who stood there frozen, smiling awkwardly at the boisterous pup.
Putin beckoned the dog over to him to give her a treat before leading her through a series of tricks.

"You were right to take caution," Putin later said to the journalists. "Yume is a no-nonsense dog. There are many people here, with camcorders running, lights shining and cameras clicking. She is being a guard dog."
A thank you gift
Japan gave the Akita to Putin four years ago as a thank you for Russia's help after the massive earthquake and tsunami that crippled Japan in 2011, according to Russian state-owned Sputnik News.
