Gunmen shoot policeman in Central Region

A policeman has been shot in the Central region when a sprinter bus he had joined on his way back from duty was attacked by unknown gunmen.

Lance Corporal Kwaku Mensah was shot in the early hours of Tuesday when the Sprinter Bus with about 22 passengers on board was attacked by the suspected armed robbers.

“We had reports that a Sprinter bus with registration number GN 4297- 13 which was travelling from Cape Coast to Kumasi with about 22 passengers on board were attacked by four suspected armed robbers at somewhere around Akwanseremu and Denkyem Buoso at about 10am,” ASP Juliana Obeng, the Ashanti regional spokesperson of the Ghana Police Service told Starr News.

“The unknown assailants shot into the vehicle forcing the driver to stop, then some valuables were extorted from the driver and the 22 travelers onboard the bus,” she explained further.

“Our investigations indicated that there was a police officer who was returning from duty and he was part of the passengers, as we speak, he sustained some injuries and he is presently receiving treatment at the Okomfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, responding well to treatment,” ASP Obeng added.

ASP Obeng has appealed to the general public to assist the police with valuable information that may enable them identify and arrest the perpetrators.

The incident happened barely two weeks after Constable Michael Kporvi met his untimely death by an unidentified gunmen at the Michel Camp in the Greater Accra region.
