Kylie Jenner Sued For Copying Lip Bite Art To Promote Reality Show
Kylie Jenner is being sued by artist Sara
Pope for allegedly copying her painting of front teeth biting a lower
lip and using the image to promote her upcoming E! reality show “Life of
Kylie.”
Pope’s 2015 oil painting “Temptation Neon” is described on her official
website as “perfect white teeth biting at sensuous and sumptuous lips, which
appear to be dripping with gloss.” The lips are accentuated by neon lights. A
similar image is featured in a promo for Jenner’s new reality show and has been
used to publicize the series on social media. Pope has now filed a lawsuit
claiming her work was plagiarized. The amount of damages the artist is seeking
is currently unclear.
Earlier this month, Jenner and
her sister Kendall were sued over the T-shirts their K + K brand was selling
with the likeness of Tupac Shakur. The Jenners were slapped with a lawsuit by a
photographer named Michael Miller, who took pictures of the slain rapper that
were used for their clothing line. In his court papers, Miller asserted that he
did not give the Jenner sisters permission to use his copyrighted photos for the
T-shirts or the website on which they were being sold.
The Jenner sisters’ legal team responded to Miller’s lawsuit with a statement
that noted, “Canada Inc., the licensee manufacturer of the K + K brand,
purchased a very small quantity of vintage t-shirts with performer images
already on them. Only two Tupac t shirts were sold before being pulled from
distribution.” They also maintained, “Canada Inc. did not copy anyone’s image,
remove any copyright notice from any image, or attempt to exploit Mr. Miller’s
claimed right of publicity. There has been no infringement or violation of
anyone’s rights.”
Gossip Cop has reached out to Pope, as well as a rep for
Jenner for more information about the lawsuit. See a side-by-side comparison of
the images below, with Pope’s on the left and Jenner’s on the right.
