Ronaldo Jr declares Barcelona icon Messi his 'idol'

Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo's son has declared Barcelona forward Lionel Messi his “idol”.

Ronaldo Jr appears set to follow in his father’s footsteps, with the Portuguese forward often posting clips of the seven-year-old’s goal-scoring exploits on social media.

The youngster is now on Instagram himself, with a first collection of posts seeing him reveal his admiration for Argentine icon Messi.

The post in question sees Ronaldo Jr meeting the Barcelona talisman at the recent FIFA Best Awards and includes the message: “Thank you my idol, Leo Messi”.

Madrid star Ronaldo went home with the Best prize that night, but his son will hold fond memories of the evening for other reasons.

It could be that he gets another opportunity to rub shoulders with the great and good of the football world in the near future, with the 2017 Ballon d’Or ceremony fast approaching.

Messi and Ronaldo will once again be locking horns in pursuit of that honour, with the pair set to take their collective haul of world player prizes to 10.

If Ronaldo, as expected, walks away with the famous trophy on Thursday, then he will draw level with Messi on five wins apiece.

With neither showing any sign of slowing down as they continue to strive for individual excellence, there may be many more battles to come.

Messi has, however, conceded that he and Ronaldo are unlikely to ever be close friends, despite both playing in Spain and the admiration of the latter’s son for his talent.

He told Marca when quizzed on their relationship: "I don't know if we will be [friends].

"Friendship is built through spending time together and getting to know each other. We have no relationship, mainly because we only see each other at awards ceremonies and that's the only time we speak.

"Everything is fine, but our lives don't cross over very often."
