Fort Lauderdale Shooting: Gunman Opens Fire at Airport, Killing 'Multiple People'

A shooter opened fire Friday afternoon at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Florida, leaving "multiple people dead" and injuring several others as panicked travelers took cover, the Broward County sheriff said.
A gunman was in custody, local law enforcement sources told NBC News.

The Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood airport, located about 25 miles north of Miami, tweeted the incident occurred at a baggage claim inside Terminal 2. Calls came in around 12:55 p.m. ET.

"At first we thought it was firecrackers," Mark Lea, 53, told MSNBC. "Everyone started screaming and running. The shooter made his way down through baggage claim. He had what looked like a 9 mm and emptied his entire clip. People were trying to run."
Lea said the shooting only stopped because the gunman ran out of bullets.
John Schicher told MSNBC he had just arrived at baggage claim with his wife and mother-in-law when the gunman started firing just feet away from him.

“No magic gets you here other than hard work and believing” Michelle Obama says to college students as she drops by in surprise visit (video)

Students of Luke C. Moore High School in Washington D.C. received a pleasant surprise after First Lady, Michelle Obama visited their school. The gobsmacked students can be heard screaming “Oh my God!” as Michelle reassures them saying, “I’m live... I’m with you here.”

She went on to encourage them not to let their background discourage them from going to college or making a difference.
“There is no magic that gets you here other than hard work and just believing.” “There were people who didn’t think I could do what I’m doing now. They told me I shouldn’t apply to the colleges that I applied to. But I want you all to understand that you cannot let that define you.”
First Lady @michelleobama surprised these high school students, telling them that no one is disqualified from going to college because of their background. #WorthYourATTN: A video posted by ATTN: (@attndotcom) on Jan 5, 2017 at 11:55am PST

Trump Calls Storm Over Hacking a ‘Witch Hunt’

President-elect Donald J. Trump said in an interview Friday morning that the storm surrounding Russian hacking during the presidential campaign is a political witch hunt being carried out by his adversaries, who he said were embarrassed by their loss to him in the election last year.
Mr. Trump spoke to The New York Times by telephone three hours before he was set to be briefed by the nation’s top intelligence and law enforcement officials about Russian hacking of American political institutions. In the conversation, he repeatedly criticized the intense focus on the alleged cyber intrusions by Russia.
“China, relatively recently, hacked 20 million government names,” he said, referring to the breach of computers at the Office of Personnel Management in late 2014 and early 2015. “How come nobody even talks about that? This is a political witch hunt.”
He noted that there have been prior successful hacks of the White House and Congress, suggesting that it was unfair because those a…

Earlier Friday morning Trump tweeted about the show — which he used to host and remains an exec producer on — calling himself “the ratings machine” and saying that Schwarzenegger was “destroyed” by comparison.

“Wow, the ratings are in and Arnold Schwarzenegger got “swamped” (or destroyed) by comparison to the ratings machine, DJT,” Trump tweeted. “So much for being a movie star — and that was season 1 compared to season 14. Now compare him to my season 1.”
According to Nielsen’s preliminary ratings — released Tuesday, the morning after Schwarzenegger’s version of the show debuted — the program’s ratings had d…

Samsung profit estimate surges despite Note 7 battery fiasco

Samsung Electronics has reported a 50% profit surge in its guidance for the fourth quarter despite the fiasco with its flagship Note 7 phone.
The earnings estimate is higher than analysts' predicted and would mark its highest quarterly profit since 2013.
In October, the world's largest smartphone maker had to scrap the Note 7 after batteries caught fire and even replacement devices went up in smoke.
The strong results are due to Samsung's semiconductor and display businesses.
The South Korean tech giant said it expected to post 9.2tn won ($7.8bn, £6.2bn) in operating profit for the months from September to December.
"When you look at the headlines over the last couple of months it's always been about exploding batteries and doom for Samsung," Bryan Ma, technology consultant with IDC told the BBC.
"But we've got to keep in mind that that's not their only business - what's really driving these earnings is strong demand for memory and di…
