US health bill 'to leave 14m more uninsured'

The Congressional Budget Office on Monday projected that the number of uninsured people would grow by 14 million in 2018 under the Republican ObamaCare replacement bill, with that number rising to 24 million by 2026.
The long-awaited analysis from the nonpartisan congressional scorekeeper is likely to shake up the debate in Congress over the measure. The estimate of the drop in coverage is even larger than many analysts had predicted.
The report finds that the 24 million people would become uninsured by 2026 largely due to changes in Medicaid. The bill both ends the extra federal funds for the expansion of Medicaid and caps overall federal spending on Medicaid, both of which CBO says would lead to people losing coverage.
Premiums in the individual market for health insurance would increase before 2020 and decrease after that, according to the CBO report.
The elimination of ObamaCare's individual mandate would entice fewer healthy people to sign up for insurance, which could…

Demi Lovato Just Chopped Off All Her Hair

While there's never a bad time to unveil a haircut, there's no place like the red carpet to debut a dramatic new look. And that's exactly what Demi Lovato did yesterday at the Kid's Choice Awards.
Right before the songstress walked the award show's red carpet, her hairstylist Cesar Ramirez teased the makeover on Instagram with a photo of Lovato's strands scattered across the floor that he captioned "the big chop."

When the star finally appeared at the Kid's Choice Awards, it was apparent that her stylist wasn't exaggerating. The pro took the singer's length from long, flowing strands up to a choppy lob.
The cut is slightly angled at the back and was styled in undone bends. Not only is this texture pretty effortless to recreate at home, it's also shows off L…

New Ferguson video casting doubt on 'robbery' sparks protests

A newly disclosed surveillance video from the hours before a black man's death in Ferguson at the hands of police has triggered fresh protests.
A filmmaker has released the footage which he says shows Michael Brown did not rob a shop, as police claimed, but instead exchanged marijuana for cigars.
He says it contradicts video released by police showing Brown threatening the shopkeeper as he walks out with cigars.
The 18-year-old was moments later shot dead by a police officer.
However, the convenience store maintains it was a robbery.
Policeman Darren Wilson was cleared of wrongdoing by investigators but the teenager's death in Ferguson, Missouri, led to violent protests and a national debate about lethal police force against African Americans.
On Sunday night, 100 people gathered outside the shop after news emerged of the new video.
The previously unreported footage shows Brown entering the Ferguson Market and Liquor around 01:00 on the day of his death.
He approaches the count…

Justin Bieber Filmed Telling Fans "You Make Me Sick"

You're a pop star who is on tour Down Under and you're maybe feeling like you woke up on the wrong side of the equator or something. You go out in public and are hounded by fans who are desperate to get a selfie with you. You're really not in the mood. Do you: a) suck it up and say cheese anyway, because it's all about the fans; b) stick to your guns and decline, but in a polite way that makes them feel less rejected; or c) rudely shoot them down and tell them they're triggering your gag reflex?
Justin Bieber went with that last option, and it's all on tape.

The video below shows Bieber being confronted by a group of young female fans during his Purpose tour stop in Melbourne, Australia. The fans seem pretty persistent in their attempts to get a photo with the singer before he leaves in his car. They've got their iPhones in selfie position and are telling him to "come on."

The Biebs isn't having it.

Obama lawyers move fast to join fight against Trump

When Johnathan Smith resigned from the U.S. Justice Department on Inauguration Day, he looked forward to spending time with his infant son, but that plan unraveled a week later when President Donald Trump unveiled his explosive foreign travel ban.
Within two weeks, Smith had a new job as legal director of civil rights group Muslim Advocates and was drafting briefs for a successful court challenge to the ban, joining other former top Obama administration lawyers now fighting Trump.
It is not surprising that Smith and some of his colleagues, political appointees of Democratic President Barack Obama, would leave the Justice Department now led by Republicans. What is unusual is how fast they have signed up to be Trump adversaries.
Some Republican lawyers say they were less hasty in moving into oppositional roles post-election. George Terwilliger, a senior Justice Department official under President George H.W. Bush, described the Obama lawyers' actions as "unprecedented …

Syria war: 2016 was the worst year for Syrian children, says Unicef

Syria's children "hit rock bottom" in 2016, with more killed than in any other year of the civil war, Unicef has said.
At least 652 children died - 255 of them in or near a school - last year, a 20% jump from the number killed during 2015, the organisation said.
The figure only includes the deaths formally verified, meaning the number could be far higher.
Unicef also believes more than 850 children were recruited to fight.
The number is double that of 2015, the report states. Those recruited increasingly found themselves on the frontline, or in extreme cases used as executioners, suicide bombers or prison guards.
"The depth of suffering is unprecedented," said Geert Cappelaere, Unicef regional director for the Middle East and North Africa speaking from Homs, Syria.
"Millions of children in Syria come under attack on a daily basis, their lives turned upside down."
Six million children are now relying on humanitarian aid due to the civil war, which has…

Sebastian Appiah writes: Suicide Is Not The Answer. Part 4

The human soul exhibits many characteristics and among them is its inability to withstand or contain pressure. The human soul is designed in such a way that it cannot contain pressure, tension and frustration and as a result when faced with it, tries to find ways to get rid of it.  One of the primary ways it tries to get rid of pressure is withdrawal or giving up hence pressure and tension leads so many people to give up on their jobs, educations and even relationships. However there’s a climax way of the soul’s quest to give up and that is the giving up of life which mostly lead to suicidal attempts.  This is where a person now sees no meaning and reason to live hence wishes death for him. There’s a biblical character by name Jonah, he was faced with this same problem where the scriptures say that he wished death for himself because he came to a state where he thought there was no need for him to live.
Ladies and Gentlemen, there’s more to live for than to die. In Ecclesi…

This Dad Got His Daughter The Perfect Gift After She Came Out As A Lesbian

The Christmas after I came out to my mom, I opened up the gayest gift I've ever gotten: a rainbow bracelet, a rainbow peace sign pin, and a rainbow flag pin.
She looked over at me after I opened up the gift and said, "I thought you could use some rainbow stuff."
And my eyes might have teared up a little. Maybe it was a little bit cheesy, but giving me that rainbow-filled package was also a simple and sweet way for her to show me how OK she was with me being a lesbian.

Turns out, my mom isn't the only parent to have this idea. Nev Sotelo, a 15-year-old girl from Fort Worth, Texas, got a similar gift from her dad after she came out to him, BuzzFeed reports.
“I came out as lesbian October 21, 2015. It was really hard for me because I wasn’t too sure how much of my family would be accepting,” she told BuzzFeed. “After coming out, my dad has been one of my biggest supporters.”

A couple of days ago, Nev's father bought her a rainbow umbrella to show his support.
