French Investment in Tema Port Expansion Strategic for Ghana - President Akufo Addo

President Akufo Addo has observed that the investment of the French company, Bolloré Transport & Logistics, in the ongoing expansion works at the Tema Port is a strategic move that will make Ghana see a boost in its imports and exports sector once completed.

Speaking at the farewell call on him by outgoing French Ambassador to Ghana, Mr Francois Pujolas, at the Ceremonial Room of the Jubilee House, President Akufo Addo said there are many firsts that have characterized the period of stay of the outgoing Ambassador and chief amongst them is the important investment that has been made in the expansion of the Tema Port.

"It is a very significant investment in our country which we are expecting to reap a great deal of benefit from," the President said.

President Akufo Addo praised the outgoing French Ambassador for being the Ambassador whose period of stay saw the French President, Emmanuel Macron, visiting Ghana. Additionally, the construction of the new French Embassy building which is near completion also begun during the term of his tour of duty in Ghana. All these, the President said, demonstrates how successful Ambassador Pujolas' stay has been and the significant improvements that the Ghana-France relationship has seen.

The Outgoing French Ambassador

The outgoing French Ambassador in a brief farewell remark said his tour of duty has been very successful and he is grateful for all the support he has enjoyed from Ghanaian diplomatic officials. He added that it is his hope that his successor will propel Ghana-France relations to even greater heights.

The Egyptian Ambassador

At the Presidency to also bid the President farewell was the outgoing Egyptian Ambassador to Ghana, Mohammed Heider. President Akufo Addo wished him well as he moved on to other challenges in his diplomatic career.

The Port Project

The port project is a joint venture between Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) APM Terminals and Bolloré Transport & Logistics. Bolloré Transport & Logistics is the result of the union between the Bolloré Group's four traditional businesses; Bolloré Ports, Bolloré Railways, Bolloré Energy and Bolloré Logistics. These are four areas of business and expertise that now work collectively to satisfy the needs of global clients. Bolloré Transport & Logistics makes all of its areas of expertise available to its clients, including construction and operation of port terminals and railway lines, freight forwarding and logistics.

Project Scope

The MPS is executing the port expansion project (terminal three), which involves the building of a 3.5-kilometre breakwater and an access channel harbouring 16 metres deepwater berths to accommodate larger vessels with sophisticated port handling equipment. The Tema Port Expansion Project is designed to provide a world class harbour infrastructure for the next 100 years. In line with the project, about 127 hectares of land has so far been reclaimed from the sea. Under the arrangement, the MPS is expected to complete two berths by June next year for operations to start and continue work on the next two berths in 2020.
