Paul Manafort is found guilty of fraud after first trial brought by Robert Mueller's prosecutors
Paul Manafort, who was the campaign chairman on Donald Trump's
presidential campaign team, has been found guilty of eight counts of
bank and tax fraud and could be sent to prison for the rest of his life.
Manafort, 69, who had once been one of Washington's wealthiest and
most powerful men, was found guilty on Tuesday by a federal jury in
Alexandria, Virginia. He had been charged with a total of 18 counts of
fraud. The jury said it was deadlocked on the other 10.
The jury's verdict defies Donald Trump, who last Friday called
Manafort "a very good person" and referred to his trial as "sad".
Manafort will be sentenced by Judge T.S. Ellis after background
reports and argument from both prosecution and defense over what
sentence is appropriate.
