Hollywood association donating $300,000 to wildfire victims

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association is reportedly donating $300,000 to victims of wildfires in the state of California as several blazes the state drive thousands from their homes.

The group, which produces the annual Golden Globes award show, will donate the money to charities supporting victims of fires raging in northern and southern California, The Associated Press reported Thursday.

News of the donation's size comes two days after the association announced that it would cancel its Golden Globe Ambassador Party, the annual event at which the organization announces which celebrity will assist presenters onstage during the awards show, due to the wildfires.

"Due to the recent mass shooting and wildfires that are currently taking place in California, the HFPA has decided to cancel the annual Golden Globe Awards season kick-off party tomorrow evening, and instead will be making donations to organizations helping the victims and first responders," the HFPA told Deadline on Tuesday.

Thousands of structures have been destroyed by the ongoing California wildfires, and dozens of deaths have also been reported as firefighters struggle to battle several major blazes.

"This is so devastating that I don't really have the words to describe it," California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) said Wednesday.

As many as 130 people, many of them elderly, are still missing amid the fires according to state police. President Trump has pledged federal assistance to the state over the fires, while rebuking state leaders over alleged failures in forest management.
